CBSSports.com Coaches Rankings

National Basketball Association – CBSSports.com
14. Sam Mitchell, Toronto: Anyone who tells you they expected to see Mitchell still coaching the Raptors when last season began is a liar. He was as lame-duck as they come, unlikely to be retained with new GM Bryan Colangelo set to bring in his own guy, probably former Suns assistant Iavaroni. Instead, Mitchell wound up the NBA Coach of the Year, leading a young Toronto team filled with international players to a surprise Atlantic Division title. Players respect him as a straight shooter who works as hard as he expects them to.

One guy we’ll probably have to look at for the HOF some day is Chris Bosh. Word out of Toronto is the plantar fasciitis that bugged Bosh last year is still there, but CB4 says he can handle it. “I’m not going to lie and say it’s 100 percent, but it’s a lot better than last year, and I’m looking forward to it going away and leaving me alone,” Bosh told reporters from Raptors camp in Italy. It’s the same injury that forced him to miss the FIBA Americas tourney, but he can still be the 20-10 guy you know, ideally if he gets some rest during the season.

From Deep

globeandmail.com: From Deep
Grange: It seems most of the objections stem from your view that it’s unlikely that so many of the Raptors who had career-best or near career-best seasons last year can do it again. Yet most of their core is young enough that it would be a surprise in they aren’t still improving, wouldn’t it?

Hollinger: That’s kind of the ying and the yang of when you have guys in their early-to-mid-20s who make sharp improvements. Was it because they were over their head, or because they’re just getting better? But if you look at guys like Boris Diaw and David West, who made huge improvements two years ago and were still young, a lot of those guys take a step back the next season.

Big picture, if I was a Raps fan I’d at least be cognizant of the possibility that guys like Ford and Calderon (especially) might not hold on to the huge gains of a year ago; actually Kapono wasn’t there a year ago but he’s in the same boat.

Bargnani making strides on and off the court

globesports.com: Bargnani making strides on and off the court
There is the case to be made that if Toronto is to build on its surprising 47-35 season a year ago, Bargnani is the primary variable.

If he continues the nearly monthly improvements he made during his rookie season, the Raptors will have a player befitting of the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft and a potent running mate for Chris Bosh.

A slower pace of growth will likely slow the Raptors, as the multitalented seven-footer is projected as the starting centre on a team whose glaring deficiency was toughness and rebounding last season.

Raptors exercise option on Bargnani

globesports.com: Raptors exercise option on Bargnani
The Toronto Raptors exercised the third-year team option on forward Andrea Bargnani’s rookie contract Friday.

The move, made during a press conference in the office of Rome mayor Walter Veltroni, locks up the seven-foot Italian through the 2008-09 season. The team retains a fourth-year option on Bargnani for 2009-10.

“Andrea has more than lived up to the enormous expectations thrust on him last season as the top pick of the draft,” Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo said in a release. “Exercising the option while in Andrea’s hometown of Rome could not be more fitting.”

Nesterovic not rocking the boat

TheStar.com | Sports | Nesterovic not rocking the boat
The veteran Raptors centre knows he’ll eventually cede his starting role to the emerging Andrea Bargnani, as early as the first game of this season. As an unselfish player he realizes that inevitability and what it will do to improve the team.

Publicly, he says he’s accepting of that role – “whatever Sam (Mitchell) thinks I can help the team with, I’m happy with,” he said – as a competitor he knows he has more to offer. It’s not his style to make waves or be disappointed.

“Every player has his ego and pride and tries to prove to everybody else that he can still play or that he can play,” the 31-year-old Nesterovic said. “I definitely want to prove that I’m still capable of playing at a high level.”

But where another player might show that desire with public ministrations, Nesterovic calmly gets himself going.

“Everybody shows it in a different way, it’s personal,” he said of the ego most athletes have to have. “Not everybody shows it by screaming, yelling, getting frustrated.

“Me? I don’t know how (it manifests itself). Probably just keeping to myself, concentrating on getting better, prove it quietly, not by words, but by actions.”

For $225, Colangelo’s shirts had better fit

TheStar.com | Sports | For $225, Colangelo’s shirts had better fit
The question marks that loom over Raptorland are many and profound. Who’ll start at small forward? Can they win a playoff series? And more to the crux of the intrigue, where, in the name of Giorgio Armani, does Bryan Colangelo, the general manager, get those high-collared, high-style shirts?

The answer to the latter is here, in the shadow of this northern Italian city’s 14th-century clock tower, behind the glass door of a tiny storefront in a cobblestoned square. Signor Colangelo, as he’s known at Manifatture all’Orologio, is one of the shirtmaker’s best customers. He buys his custom-cut, French-cuffed duds in batches of 12 or 15, usually a couple of times a year when he’s in town on scouting trips. The shirts are made off the premises, in a nearby village by a 60-something grandmother named Luisa. She can cut and sew approximately one shirt a day, and there is no quickening the pace of production. Though the shop employs several shirtmakers, Luisa alone fills all of Colangelo’s orders in the interest of continuity.

D the key for uptempo Raps

TorontoSun.com – Basketball – D the key for uptempo Raps
But head coach Sam Mitchell insisted that his main priority thus far at camp, which switches to Rome today after five days in Treviso, has been defence.

Toronto finished 16th overall in the NBA last season in opponent scoring, which was a huge improvement from the 2005-’06 campaign, when they finished second.

But Mitchell said his team will have to continue to improve if it hopes to advance past the first round of the playoffs this season.

Tanenbaum in full tizzy over team’s turnaround

TorontoSun.com – Basketball – Tanenbaum in full tizzy over team’s turnaround
“We’re looking for this to be the start of (our) championship season,” Tanenbaum said.

The Raptors did improve by 20 games last year from the season before, going 47-35 and winning the Atlantic Division for the first time in team history. Most insiders, however, don’t share Tanenbaum’s optimism that the Raptors will win it all this season, although many believe that the team does have the talent to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs.

Toronto Raptors put on a show for Italy troops

Stars and Stripes: Toronto Raptors put on a show for Italy troops
Five buses full of U.S. troops took in a preseason scrimmage Wednesday night by the Toronto Raptors at Palaverde — home of the Benetton Treviso basketball club.

Sgt. Olasupo Sobomehin wore a Raptors jersey … and not just in an attempt to get some face time with the players.

“I grew up in Toronto,” said the soldier from the 386th Movement Control Team assigned to Caserma Ederle.

“I’m a Raptors fan,” he said, even though he hadn’t attended an NBA game in more than 10 years.
