Bosh puts boot to injury

TorontoSun.com – Basketball – Bosh puts boot to injury
“It’s good right now, but I still treat it with respect,” Bosh said yesterday as the Raptors gathered as a team for the first time prior to heading over to Italy for their European training camp. “I’m not going to say I’m 100% because I’m too nervous to say that. I just want to make sure I stay on top of it, continue to do the treatment that is necessary and hope that it completely goes away when it’s done.”

Training camp starts

globeandmail.com: Globe on Sports
What was expected to be an easy start to training camp to loosen up after arriving Saturday morning by way of an overnight flight on the Dallas Mavericks’ Boing 757 was instead a tough, intense, practice that went a full two hours.

“A tone was set,” said Raptors president Bryan Colangelo.

5 questions for 07-08…

globesports.com: Raptors bound for Europe
But there are really only five questions that count as the Raptors set out to prove that their 47-35 performance last year is a starting point rather than a high point.

Garbajosa back and rarin’ to go

TheStar.com | Sports | Garbajosa back and rarin’ to go
“The only thing I know is I can practise at the level of my teammates; I can run and jump. I think you cannot feel that maybe Garbo is a step back or something.

“That is the feeling that I have.”

First workout

TheStar.com | Sports | Raps’ consiglieri Embry gets contract extension
The Raptors worked for nearly three hours in Treviso, Italy, last night to kick off the 2007-08 pre-season, a longer-than-usual run for a group that spent about eight hours in an airplane just getting to camp.

“It wasn’t too bad, not that long,” coach Sam Mitchell said.

There was very little contact work and a lot of instruction, according to those who got to sit through the session. The media is kept at bay until the final minutes – a lot of stretching and chatting was what everyone saw on Day 1 – but the workout included a lot of teaching of defensive principles, Mitchell said.

Raps’ consiglieri Embry gets contract extension

TheStar.com | Sports | Raps’ consiglieri Embry gets contract extension
The senior basketball advisor to the Raptors has agreed to a contract extension with the team that will keep him as the eminence grise of the Toronto franchise through the 2009-10 season.

Embry, a basketball hall of famer, first joined the Raptors in 2004 as an advisor to then-general manager Rob Babcock.

He helped shepherd Babcock and a rookie head coach in Sam Mitchell through a tumultuous season and a half before Babcock was fired.

European invasion begins

bryan colangeloTheStar.com | Sports | European invasion begins
“It’s going to expose our product to a host of people who have expressed a lot of interest in our team,” president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said in a telephone interview this week of the Raptors’ journey that starts this morning. “We are clearly the NBA’s only truly international team.”

Mitchell less than thrilled by overseas tour

TheStar.com | Sports | Mitchell less than thrilled by overseas tour
So now we know: Signing a contract extension that could earn him as much as $17 million (U.S.) for his next four years’ work hasn’t changed Mitchell. At age 44, the 2006-07 NBA coach of the year remains perhaps the most curmudgeonly human being on the planet not currently residing in a nursing home.

Bargnani will be in demand

TorontoSun.com – Basketball – Bargnani will be in demand
Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani goes by the nickname Il Mago (The Magician) back home in Italy.

Which is good, because he may need the power to disappear at times given the media scrutiny he is expected to be under when the Raptors touch down in Treviso, Italy on Sept.29 for the first day of training camp.

The Raptors will train in Treviso, where Bargnani played for two seasons in Lega A (Italy’s top basketball league), from Sept. 29-Oct.4, before heading to Rome, where Bargnani was born and raised, for pre-season games against the Boston Celtics (Oct.6) and home side Lottomatica Vitrus Roma (Oct.7).

Jose happy to hit road

CANOE — SLAM! Sports – Basketball – NBA Toronto: Jose happy to hit road
Calderon believes the team will bond even closer because the guys will see more of each other outside of the basketball court while they’re in Europe from Sept.29 to Oct.11.

The Raptors play three pre-season games in Europe, Oct. 6 and 7 in Rome and Oct. 11 in Madrid, after holding training camp in Treviso, Italy and, unlike when they play pre-season games at home, they will see more of each other after and before the games. And that, said Calderon via a conference call yesterday, ultimately will pay dividends — basically, the old ‘team that spends time together, wins together’ theory.

Grumpy Sam is back

CANOE — SLAM! Sports – Basketball – NBA Toronto: Grumpy Sam is back
The Raptors training camp does not open until Oct. 1, but head coach Sam Mitchell seems to be in mid-season form in terms of being grumpy.

In a conference call with members of the European media yesterday, Mitchell did not seem over the moon with the idea of the Raptors holding training camp, and playing three pre-season games, in Europe this fall.

Calderon makes point to remember team first

TheStar.com | Sports | Calderon makes point to remember team first
The 25-year-old point guard, who’ll once again back up starter T.J. Ford when training camp begins next week in Italy, said Thursday he’s not about to start demanding more minutes or increased responsibility.

However …

“I know my role in the team,” Calderon said on a conference call Thursday morning. “(But) I’m going to keep working hard to make a more difficult decision for (coach) Sam (Mitchell).

“I’m just going to try to be a little better player for the team.”

By far the most encouraging sign for Raptors fans was the continuing development and growth of Jose Calderon.

The Spanish point guard was chosen to the all-tournament team at Eurobasket 2007, at which Spain was upset by Russia in the final of the European championship.

Raps throw caution to off-season wind

TheStar.com | Sports | Raps throw caution to off-season wind
If any of them need a rest, Toronto’s European training camp starts in less then two weeks. And it makes one wonder: With so much of the lineup so actively engaged in summertime hostilities – and with Chris Bosh excusing himself from the U.S. national team to nurture that worrisomely persistent case of plantar fasciitis – aren’t they setting themselves up for a late-season energy crisis?

Garbo passes first test

CANOE — SLAM! Sports – Basketball – NBA Toronto: Garbo passes first test
The Toronto Raptors will have forward Jorge Garbajosa undergo another series of tests on his injured left leg this week.

Fresh off helping to lead Spain to the gold-medal game at the European championships on Sunday (a heartbreaking 60-59 loss to Russia), Garbajosa has been directed to have the leg examined and evaluated again — even though he managed to get through the tournament without seemingly aggravating the injury. Late last season Garbajosa fractured his left fibula and tore ligaments in his left ankle after an awkward fall in Boston.
